Safeword regularly reviews its technical, organisational and operational security measures and may introduce additional safeguards, technologies and procedures, in line with recognised industry standards and applicable legal requirements, as appropriate to help protect personal information and maintain the security of the Services.
Safeword retains personal information only for as long as it is reasonably necessary to fulfil the purposes for which it was collected, to comply with our legal obligations, to resolve disputes, to enforce our agreements, to protect our community, and to maintain the security and integrity of the Services.
Retention periods may vary depending on the type of information, the purpose for which it was collected, legal or regulatory requirements, and the legitimate needs of Hove Retail Limited.
Where personal information is no longer required, we will securely delete, anonymise or otherwise dispose of it in accordance with our data retention procedures.
While your account remains active, we retain personal information necessary to:
If an account becomes inactive, we may retain account information for a reasonable period to:
Inactive accounts may eventually be anonymised or deleted where continued retention is no longer necessary.

Certain information may continue to be retained where required by law or where necessary to establish, exercise or defend legal claims.
Most account data is deleted within 30 days of a verified deletion request, except for the categories noted elsewhere in this section (e.g. payment/financial records, security logs, legal holds) which are retained for their own specified periods.
Safeword uses VerifyMyAge to assist with age verification.
We retain only the information necessary to demonstrate that age verification has been completed and to comply with applicable legal and regulatory obligations.
Verification information is retained only for as long as reasonably necessary and in accordance with our legal obligations and contractual arrangements with VerifyMyAge.
Consistent with standard UK age-assurance practice, the underlying verification evidence (e.g. ID documents, facial images) is expected to be processed and deleted by VerifyMyAge shortly after the check is completed (commonly within 24–72 hours) and is not retained by Safeword. Safeword itself retains only the verification outcome (e.g. "age verified: yes," date and method) for as long as the account remains active, plus a limited compliance window afterwards, to demonstrate compliance to regulators.
Where creators complete identity or eligibility verification, Safeword may retain verification records for the purposes of:

Where content is deleted, copies may remain within secure backup systems for a limited period before permanent deletion.
Deleted content is removed from live systems immediately and purged from backups within 30–90 days, in line with our backup retention cycle, unless retained longer under Moderation Records or Legal Holds.
Private messages, support requests, moderation correspondence and other communications may be retained for as long as reasonably necessary to:
Where appropriate, communications may be securely deleted or anonymised when no longer required.

Security logs are retained only for as long as reasonably necessary to maintain the security of the platform, investigate incidents and comply with legal obligations.
Security logs are retained for a minimum of 6 months and up to 12 months, in line with NCSC guidance ("Introduction to Logging for Security Purposes"), which recommends at least 6 months given typical breach dwell times.
Personal information may continue to exist within encrypted backup systems for a limited period following deletion from our live systems.
Backup data is retained solely for disaster recovery, business continuity and security purposes.
Backups are securely managed and automatically expire in accordance with our internal retention procedures.
Rolling backups are retained for 30–90 days before automatic expiry.

Where it is no longer necessary to retain information in an identifiable form, Safeword may anonymise or aggregate information so that it can no longer be linked to an identifiable individual.
Anonymised information may be retained for statistical analysis, service improvement, business planning and research.
When personal information reaches the end of its retention period and is no longer required, Safeword will take reasonable steps to securely delete, destroy or anonymise the information using methods appropriate to the nature of the data and the systems in which it is stored.
Safeword regularly reviews its retention practices to ensure that personal information is not kept for longer than necessary and that retention periods remain appropriate, proportionate and compliant with applicable legal and regulatory requirements, updating them from time to time to reflect changes in legislation, operational requirements or industry best practice.

You also have the right to object to direct marketing at any time.
If you object to direct marketing, we will stop sending marketing communications unless you subsequently choose to opt in again.
Where processing is based on your consent or on the performance of a contract and is carried out by automated means, you may request a copy of certain personal information in a structured, commonly used and machine-readable format.
Where technically feasible, and where permitted by law, you may also request that the information be transmitted directly to another service provider.
Where we rely on your consent to process personal information, you may withdraw that consent at any time.

Safeword is built on trust, consent, accountability and respect for our community, and we remain committed to maintaining the highest standards of privacy and data protection across our Services.
Safeword was created to provide a trusted online community for consenting adults to connect, communicate, learn, create and share within the BDSM, fetish and kink communities.
We recognise that many of our members choose Safeword because privacy, discretion, consent and trust are fundamental to their lives. We understand the responsibility that comes with operating a platform where members may choose to share highly personal information, intimate content and sensitive aspects of their identity. Protecting that trust is central to everything we do.
We believe that privacy is a fundamental right. Safeword is committed to collecting and processing only the personal information that is reasonably necessary to provide our Services, comply with legal obligations and protect our community.
We do not sell our members' personal information to advertisers, data brokers or other third parties for their own marketing purposes.
Consent is one of the core principles upon which the Safeword community is built. We expect all members to respect the principles of informed, voluntary and ongoing consent in their interactions with others, both online and offline.
Creators are responsible for ensuring that all identifiable individuals appearing in content published through the Services are adults who have freely consented to both the creation and publication of that content. Content that appears to breach these principles may be investigated and removed, and appropriate enforcement action may be taken.
We are committed to providing an environment that promotes lawful adult expression while protecting members from illegal activity, abuse and exploitation. Safeword supports the right of consenting adults to engage in lawful discussion, education, creativity and self-expression, and we strive to treat members of our diverse BDSM, fetish and kink community with dignity, fairness and respect.
Safeword uses a combination of age verification procedures, AI-assisted technologies, trained human moderators, member reporting tools, fraud prevention systems, security monitoring and clearly published Community Standards to help maintain the safety, integrity and reliability of the platform. We will take appropriate action where content or behaviour breaches our Terms of Service, Community Standards or applicable law.
We believe members should understand how their personal information is collected, used, shared and protected, and we aim to explain our practices clearly and avoid unnecessary complexity.
Safeword is committed to acting responsibly in the way we manage personal information and moderate the platform. We regularly review our internal procedures, security measures, moderation practices and compliance processes, recognising that maintaining trust requires continual improvement rather than a one-time commitment.
Creating a safe and trusted community is a shared responsibility. We ask every member to act honestly and respectfully, respect the privacy and consent of others, report suspected breaches of our policies, protect their own account security, comply with applicable laws, and contribute positively to the Safeword community.
Hove Retail Limited is committed to operating Safeword responsibly, ethically and transparently. As technology, legislation and the needs of our community evolve, we will continue to improve our platform, strengthen our privacy and security practices and refine our safeguarding measures.
Our objective is to provide a trusted platform where consenting adults can participate with confidence, knowing that their privacy, dignity and personal information are treated with care and respect.
Thank you for placing your trust in Safeword.
